I'm just starting to listen to this book - I'm still in the first chapter somewhere, actually, but he's already saying stuff that's making me think. Of course, the idea that legal abortions caused the massive downturn in crime in the mid-90's (just when the kids who *would* have been born to "adverse" family conditions would have hit the prime time for them to become criminals after Roe vs. Wade was decided) intrigues me. I've often felt that abortion is a much better idea than giving birth to kids who have no chance. I saw a cartoon once (and even my formidable Googling skills couldn't find it!!) that showed a little boy with band-aids and bruises sitting in an apartment with hypodermic needles littered across the floor (and not much else) looking out over a pro-life demonstration saying, "what about me?". That cartoon pretty much sums up my feelings on the abortion debate. There is no reason to bring children into the world who have so many obstacles to overcome.
Damn it. There was another reason I was going to blog about this book today, and now I can't remember it. I'd scrap the post entirely, but I really like the preceding paragraph, so now I'll just pretend that the entire post was supposed to be about the abortion --> crime issue and not about whatever it was that struck me as so freakin' insightful when I was listening to it. I hate it when that happens. I guess I'll post about whatever it was I really liked later, when I run across the idea again in the book...
