I don't understand why the left is letting the religious right get away with being the "religious" right. If one looks at the lessons of the bible, the left is CLEARLY following the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament. Admittedly, the religious right does follow the bible, but it's the Old Testament that they revere.
I got into an argument with my mother one day about the relative "sinfulness" of various laws in Leviticus - you know the ones:
and Mom told me that when Christ came, he swept all of those laws (except for the gay ones) away. A few days later, she was talking about the 10 commandments, and I reminded her that when Christ came, all those laws were rendered null and void, remember? She, of course, insisted that she meant no such thing...Don't eat shellfish, don't wear clothes of mixed fibers, men - don't sleep with other men (no prohibitions on lesbian sex - did you notice that - men are men no matter how far you go back in time, apparently), don't shave your beard, etc.
The point is that most fundamentalist, literalist evangelical Christians ignore completely the edicts by Christ to love your neighbor, support the poorest among you and "judge not" others. They tend to focus on the legalistic laws of the Old Testament. If a political candidate came out and confronted the religious right with that fact, they would win the moderate to left-leaning Christian base. I admit that it doesn't seem like there are that many of those types around, but I think that they are there - they are just being quiet because they don't want to admit that they follow the same religion as the right-leaning Christians.
This is, of course, just my opinion. I'm neither Christian, nor conservative, so my take on how to get Christian conservatives may be way off base - but I think it's worth a try...

You know, if you hang around Craig's List long enough, you will find absolute gems. Perfect little sparkly nuggets of beauty that you read and you absolutely must share with everyone - because they are so freakin' perfect. So, today, I came across a gem entitled, Why Nice Guys SUCK, and I had to share. I think it hit a nerve with me - I dated a guy like this once and I have to admit that I became the biggest bitch on the face of the earth - because I could. He never called me on my behavior or argued with me about whatever it was I was mad about (and I seemed to be mad A LOT, trying to get some reaction out of him). He just hung his head and said, "sorry honey" every time I started yelling. I hated that with a passion!!! I'm usually not bitchy at all (no comments from the peanut gallery Rogue or Tab!!!), but he really brought out the nasty side of my personality - and not in a good way.
Anyway, I read that, loved it and felt the need to share. Guys - read it, understand it and - please - live it!!!
In a New York Times article published a few weeks ago, the argument was made that messy desks show their owners to be more creative and have more limber minds. Parents with messy closets are cooler and more nice than their more tidy counterparts. I just had to upload a pic of my desk, as it looks this morning, in response to that article. I'm so freakin' creative and limber...

I don't really have one, so I'm going to have to make this up as I go along...
- See my son happily settled
- Go back to Italy
- Finish college
- Make enough money that I no longer live month-to-month
- Visit Europe with my son
- Have no regrets about things I *didn't* do while on my deathbed
that's all I can think of for now. This should be a meme!! I think I'm going to tag Tab, Mike and Bobbi. I wanna see your lists!!
Damn it. There was another reason I was going to blog about this book today, and now I can't remember it. I'd scrap the post entirely, but I really like the preceding paragraph, so now I'll just pretend that the entire post was supposed to be about the abortion --> crime issue and not about whatever it was that struck me as so freakin' insightful when I was listening to it. I hate it when that happens. I guess I'll post about whatever it was I really liked later, when I run across the idea again in the book...
